Old Martin County Courthouse
Built in 1885, the Old Martin County Courthouse is one of the 27 oldest courthouses in North Carolina and one of only a dozen built between 1860 and 1900. It blends Italianate, Medieval, and late Victorian elements to form a castle-like exterior. The interior features twin, free-standing curved stairwells with black walnut trim. The coved ceilings, and sloping heart pine floors of the upstairs courtroom are highlighted by sunlight streaming through tall windows surrounding the room. The same windows are featured in the first story, as well. Vacated in 1983, it is undergoing an adaptive restoration to become a cultural center for the region. The building was saved from the wrecking ball when Friends of the Old Martin County Courthouse drew up a restoration plan, raised startup funds, and were given the property by the Martin County Commissioners. The group is now in the third and final phase of it's adaptive restoration with plans to see the building used as a regional cultural center. Volunteers and donations are needed to complete the project. Contact Lib Brandon, (252) 792-3562, Friends of the Old Martin County Courthouse for more information or to arrange a group program.
