NC Scenic Byway--Tar Heel Trace
With its name taken from the pine tar industry, this route rambles through an area rich with Pine trees and the once-vital tar by-product. Passing through picturesque turn-of-the-century communities, you will skirt along the Tar River and the Roanoke. This is farming country and, depending on the time of year that you visit, you will smell the rich odor of peanuts being dug or see acres of white, fluffy cotton, and golden fields of soybeans, locally called "peas." This loop of the NC Scenic Byways covers 53 miles and takes approximately one hour. Download the Tar Heel Trace loop of the NC Scenic Byways from the link show. Visit the NC Scenic Byways Web site for more byways, including the nearby Windsor-Edenton Loop.
