St. Martin's Episcopal Church was established as a missionary station in 1868. The church was constructed in either 1879 or 1880. Materials were produced locally except for the ball and stained glass which were imported from England.
St. Martin's is a principal example of Gothic-Victorian church architecture in North Carolina. The carpenter's application of traditional Gothic design to wood resulted in purely original decoration. It is rich in detail and includes a sophisticated double-barrel-vaulted ceiling with an elaborate truss system.
The church is one of many buildings in Hamilton on the National Register of Historic Places historic district. Make an appointment to take in the interesting architecure of the building and study the the recently commissioned gilded paintings by artist David Hewson. You can enjoy the church with others during the annual Christmas service, too.
